Two other victims were admitted to hospital for further treatment, one of whom spent the night in the ICU for observation, but the other eight were discharged with minor injuries last night, ruv.is reports.

“The cause of the accident is unknown. We have just investigated the scene of the accident and won’t announce anything until we have reviewed pictures, sketches and testimonies,” a representative of the police in Blönduós told Morgunbladid.

The Icelandic Coast Guard sent two helicopters to the scene, which flew nine of the victims to hospital. The other two were transported by ambulance.

A Coast Guard helicopter was also called out to take a tourist who was injured while hiking in the southern West Fjords yesterday to hospital in Reykjavík. Her injuries proved not to be serious.
