Elena Poniatowska Speaks at Seminar in Reykjavík

One of Mexico’s best-known authors, Elena Poniatowska, is in Reykjavík to introduce her novel Here’s to You Jesusa (Hasta no verte Jesús mío) and give a seminar on Mexican literature.

To celebrate the publication of the novel in Icelandic translation by Forlagið Publishing, Poniatowska will hold a writers’ evening at Iðnó Theater by the Reykjavík pond at 8 pm tonight.

A seminar on literary translation and the work of Elena Poniatowska will be held at the Nordic House from 9 am to 2 pm tomorrow. Today’s event will be held in Icelandic (with Poniatowska speaking in English) and tomorrow’s seminar in English and Spanish.

Poniatowska writes fiction as well as articles and non-fiction books about social issues. She has written extensively on human rights, the social status of women and the poor.

Here’s to You Jesusa was first published in 1969 and has since been reissued in Mexico close to forty times and translated to numerous languages.
