A woman in her late 70s was found dead in her service apartment for pensioners in Reykjavík on December 23. She had probably passed away days before her relatives, who were going to visit her, noticed that something was wrong.
When the woman didn’t open her door, her relatives called police who entered the apartment and found the woman’s body, visir.is reports.
This is the second time this December that a woman who lived alone is found after lying dead for days. The other woman had probably passed away more than a week before her body was discovered.
Ellý Thorsteinsdóttir, the office manager of Reykjavík City’s Welfare Department, said she regrets the incident of the woman found dead on December 23, but added that the welfare department has no obligation to inspect its service apartments regularly.
The individuals who live there do receive support and domestic service according to their personal needs, but they have to request service themselves, Thorsteinsdóttir explained. She said this case will be inspected.
