An elderly couple was discovered unconscious in their camper-trailer in Djúpidalur valley in Iceland’s Westfjords on Sunday morning. The couple was transported to the hospital in Reykjavík via helicopter and are now recovering.
Police in the Westfjords are currently investigating what caused the couple to lose consciousness and believe gas may have leaked from their camping equipment, Fréttabladid reports.
“The investigation is aimed at finding out whether there was a fault in their equipment, but we cannot reveal what kind of equipment they used at the moment,” said Ísafjördur Chief of Police Jón Svanberg Hjartarson.
According to Hjartarson, there was no gas detector in the camper-trailer.
“Gas and oxygen detectors are standard equipment in all of our camper-trailers. If campers don’t have such detectors in their trailers we strongly recommend that they buy them as they are inexpensive and very important for safety,” said Björgvin Barddal, the general manager of Aegir trailer rental.
Gas is used for both cooking and heating in camper-trailers in Iceland.
