Eighty-One Children Adopted from 2008-2012

Eighty-one children were adopted from abroad by Icelandic parents between 2008 and 2012.

The largest number of children were adopted from India, China, Columbia, the Czech Republic and Togo, ruv.is reports.

The information was revealed by Interior Minister Hanna Birna Kristjánsdóttir in response to a question by MP for the Progressive Party Jóhanna María Sigmundsdóttir. Hanna Birna also said that the ministry has received information from the Icelandic Adoption Society that it is working with organizations to explore the possibility of same-sex couples adopting.

The minister said that she would be happy to make agreements with those countries which authorized adoption by same-sex couples.
