A total of 89 fin whales have been caught off Iceland this summer according to the Directorate of Fisheries.

Each whale is said to produce an average of 25 tons of meat for consumption, meaning a total of roughly 2,200 tons has been produced this season, ruv.is reports.
The fin whale hunting season started in mid-June and will run through September. The quota is for 154 animals in addition to 20 percent of the quota from last year.
The 130 tons of whale meat which was en route to Japan via Hamburg was returned to Iceland after the shipping company declined to transport it on from Germany. Icelandic shipping company Samskip announced that it will not be involved in further export of fin whale meat.
