The crew members of Hrafn GK were surprised when an eight-meter-long shark got caught in their trawler.
The shark was a basking shark, the largest fish in Icelandic waters and the second largest in the world. The shark was still alive when it was caught onboard, so it was set loose again after it had been photographed. Morgunbladid reports. 16 jún 2008
Not much is known about the basking shark although it is quite common in Icelandic waters in the summertime. During the wintertime they disappear and it is believed that the female sharks then migrate somewhere deep in the North Atlantic to spawn.
