Eight Downtown Bars Receive Super Bowl Exemption

Eight Reykjavík bars and restaurants have received a special dispensation from the city to stay open to screen this year’s NFL Super Bowl Championship in the US, RÚV reports. This is double the number of venues that received the same dispensation to stay open later than usual for the event last year.

Lebowski Bar, Ölver, The Dubliner, Keiluhöllin, American Bar, The English Pub, Bjarni Fel/Hressó, and Ægisgarður will all be allowed to stay open to screen Super Bowl LII, which will be broadcast at 6:30 PM EST (11:30 PM GMT) on Sunday, February 4th. Some of these venues applied for permission to serve alcohol until 5:00 AM on the night/morning of the game, but this application was denied. Alcohol will, therefore, stopped being served at the viewing locations at 4:30AM.

According to the application submitted by Lebowski Bar, which had been allowed to stay open late for the 2017 Super Bowl, the city checked with the Reykjavík police to determine if there had been any noise complaints related to the extended opening hours last year. No such complaints seem to have been made.

The 2018 Super Bowl will take place in Minneapolis, Minnesota and will be between the New England Patriots and the Philadelphia Eagles. Justin Timberlake will perform in the halftime show.
