For the second year running, Chelsea football player Eidur Smári Gudjohnsen has been elected Icelandic Sportsman of the Year by the Association of Sports Correspondents. He received a total of 460 points, a perfect score, well above the runners-up, handball player Gudjón Valur Sigurdsson and women’s football player Ásthildur Helgadóttir. Sigurdsson got a total of 287 points, and Helgadóttir 203 points. Eidur ranked the highest on each of the 23 votes, the highest person being awarded 20 points in each case.
Besides receiving a trophy, Gudhohnsen was handed a check that he intends to hand over to an association of children with rare diseases, Einstök born.
Eidur Gudjonsen’s father, Arnor Gudjonsen, was also a professional soccer player and was selected sportsman of the year 1987.
The award has been presented annually for the last 50 years.
