The British airline EasyJet will double its scheduled flights to Iceland in the upcoming season. This move will make them second only to Icelandair in flight frequency to Iceland, according to a press release.
Direct flights to Keflavík from Gatwick, Geneva and Belfast are due to begin this autumn. The airline already flies to Basel, Switzerland; Bristol, Luton, Edinburgh and Manchester.
Managing director of easyJet in the U.K., Ali Gayward, said in a statement that the company is looking to more well-off travelers in regards to their Iceland flights. “We want to work with Icelanders in how to best control the tourism flow to the country. We have looked at the backgrounds of those who travel with EasyJet to Iceland and we have noticed that the country appeals the most to those relatively well-off, as Iceland is not a cheap destination.”
Björn Óli Hauksson, CEO of Isavia, the company which operates Keflavík International Airport, , is pleased with the news. “These new EasyJet flights are a just another pillar of support for winter tourism in Iceland and they will help distribute travelers outside of the peak season. Similarly this is good news regarding the use of the airport itself as EasyJet’s flights are scheduled just outside the terminal’s rush hour.”
