As of this morning, the roads from Reykjavík leading to the east and south, all the way to Egilsstaðir, East Iceland, a total of around 700 kilometers (450 miles), are green (indicating that they are ice-free and easily passable), according to the road conditions map on the website of the Icelandic Road Administration. Such conditions are unusual in mid-winter.

Red roads indicate that they are closed due to being impassable. Only one community in Iceland is without a road connection today, Mjóifjörður (population 25) in the East Fjords. The only way to visit Mjóifjörður is via the twice-weekly ferry from Neskaupstaður.
