Earthquakes on Reykjanes Peninsula

An earthquake swarm was recorded on the Reykjanes peninsula, Southwest Iceland this past weekend, RÚV reports. An earthquake of magnitude 2.8 was measured in the area this morning, along with several smaller ones in its wake.

Kristín Jónsdóttir, head earthquake specialist at the Icelandic Met Office says that the activity began north of a known fissure area, then moved five kilometers (3.1 miles) south, where it continues. Kristín states the activity is being closely monitored, and will hopefully be limited to small earthquakes. However, it is not out of the question that a larger earthquake will occur in the area.
