An earthquake that registered 2.9 on the Richter scale was felt in the capital city at approximately 4 am this morning; the epicenter was 6.7 kilometers north-northeast of Krýsuvík, a geothermal area situated on the Reykjanes Peninsula.

Several smaller aftershocks were felt following the earthquake, the Icelandic Met Office told rúv.is.
Tremors are common in the region.
