Earthquake Hits Reykjanes, Shakes Reykjavík

An earthquake of a 3.1 magnitude hit just short of four kilometers east-northeast of Keilir, a mountain on Reykjanes peninsula, Southwest Iceland, at 0:40 am last night.

Residents of Hafnarfjörður, central Reykjavík and the capital’s Breiðholt suburb reported having felt the earthquake, ruv.is and visir.is report.

According to a statement from the Icelandic Met Office, the earthquake was followed by two aftershocks, both of which were below a magnitude of 1.5.

The statement remarked that seismic activity is common in the region.

In December more than 1,000 earthquakes were picked up by sensors in Iceland.
