An earthquake of magnitude 3.6 hit Bárðarbunga volcano, located under the Vatnaökull glacier ice cap, at 9:48 am yesterday, according to the Icelandic Met Office. Several aftershocks followed.
Last night, a series of earthquakes occurred 30 km (19 miles) southwest of Reykjanes peninsula, four of which were in excess of magnitude 3. At 7:27 pm, two earthquakes hit the area, both measuring 3.1. At 8:10 pm, two others followed, both of them of magnitude 3.2. The aftershocks were considerably smaller.
