An earthquake of a magnitude 3.6 occurred at 4:01 am this morning in the Öxarfjörður region, Northeast Iceland, the Icelandic Met Office reports. Its epicenter was in Öxarfjörður fjord, 12 km west-southwest of the town of Kópasker, where residents reported having felt it.
Three hundred tremors registered overnight in the area. Two of them, of a magnitude 3, occurred at 3:26 am and 4:03 am. There have been many tremors in the area in recent days, but tremors are common in this part of the country.
January 13 marked the 40th anniversary of a major earthquake that hit Kópasker in 1976, when many houses were destroyed and others damaged.
