Eager to be born

A baby boy was born in his parents’ car on a highway in southwest Iceland on Wednesday, while they were driving to the hospital.

Sveinn and Silvía Speight were driving along Reykjanesbraut towards the Health Institution in Keflavík, where Silvía Speight had planned to give birth, when their baby decided it did not want to wait any longer.

The couple told Fréttabladid that Silvía’s water had broken before they left their home in Hafnafjördur, but they had thought they could make it to the hospital in Keflavík.

When it became clear that they would not make it in time, Sveinn had no other choice but to stop the car and deliver the baby himself. The ambulance crew gave him instructions over the phone while rushing to the scene.

The ambulance arrived shortly after the baby boy was born and took the family to the Health Institution in Keflavík. Mother and baby are in good health.

The Speights have two other children, a five-year-old son and an 18-month-old daughter.
