Dynamite in the Westfjords destroyed by bomb squad

Bomb specialists at Iceland’s Coast Guard destroyed dynamite at a farm in Dýrafjördur in the Westfjords yesterday. The dynamite was very old and considered dangerous.

Police in Ísafjördur, the capital of the Westfjords, were notified about the dynamite by a farmer from Höfdi in Dýrafjördur. The ancient dynamite was kept in an outhouse at the farm. RÚV reports.

The police contacted the Coast Guard, which immediately had two bomb disposal experts flown over to Dýrafjördur in a helicopter.

The experts had a police vehicle transport the dynamite with great care to a spit of land by the fjord, in safe distance from the farm, and burned and destroyed the dynamite.

The Coast Guard believes dynamite could be kept at other farms around the country and encourages those who are in possession of old dynamite to notify experts promptly.

According to RÚV, old dynamite can prove hazardous and needs to be transported extremely carefully.
