In the latest round of evaluations, the notorious Icelandic Naming Committee rejected the names Cris, Dylan and Eileithyja.

Meanwhile Cæsar, Aríana, Indí, Karún, Hebba, Þjóðar, Hleiður, Móa, Sylvia, Sigurörn, Lilý, Ilse, Remek and Kórekur, were all approved by the committee.

Þingey was additionally approved as a female first name, but rejected as a middle name on the grounds that it has the characteristics of a given name.

And while Eileithyia, and variant spelling Eileithyja, were both rejected, the Icelandicized Eileiþía was added to the registry of accepted names.

The Ministry of the Interior, in collaboration with the University of Iceland’s Social Science Research Institute, is currently in the process of evaluating public opinion of the naming committee and other legal limitations on naming practices.

This past winter, the ministry solicited opinions on the matter from members of the public, and received 30 responses. Of those 30, 7 concluded that at least some revision to current legislation was necessary, while 20 wanted to do away with legal restrictions on names altogether.
