American doughnut giant Dunkin’ Donuts is about to open its first branch in Iceland, on Laugavegur, downtown Reykjavík, at 9 am tomorrow. The news has been controversial and received mixed reactions.
Those who have been counting down the days will be thrilled to learn that the first 50 customers will receive a customer card entitling them to a free box of six donuts every week for an entire year, nútíminn reports.
As Iceland Review has reported, Dunkin’ Donuts has big plans for Iceland and the rest of the Nordic countries: the chain is set to open 16 stores across Iceland over the next five years, as well as between 20-30 stores in Denmark, Finland and Sweden. The Iceland stores will be open in conjunction with 10-11 convenience stores and most will be located within the existing 10-11 shops.
If the chain’s plans are realized, Iceland will have the largest number of Dunkin’ Donuts per capita in the world, with one store per 20,000 inhabitants compared to one store per 46,000 inhabitants in the United States.
