Drug Smuggler Gets Over Eight Years in Prison

The Reykjavík District Court has sentenced a 46-year old Dutch citizen to eight and a half years in prison for smuggling drugs into the country in September of last year, RÚV reports. He confessed to having known about the existence of the drugs, which were hidden in a rented RV onboard the ferry Norræna. His wife, who denied all charges, was acquitted.

The couple came to the country at the beginning of September. A large amount of drugs was found hidden in food cans, two gas tanks and a spare tire inside the RV, including 209,000 MDMA tablets and 10 kilos (22 lbs) of MDMA powder.

The man testified he had agreed to take the trip because his daughter had received threats. The reason for transporting the drugs to Iceland was, thus, not financial gain, but a way to protect the life and health of his daughter. The wife testified she was unaware of the existence of the drugs.

The case is without precedent; such is the amount of the drugs.
