Driver and passenger jump out of burning car

Two persons, who were driving on Sudurlandsvegur highway between Reykjavík and Selfoss, jumped out of their car just before it burst into flames yesterday morning. They were not harmed by the incident.

The driver noticed white smoke coming from his vehicle and decided to vacate it with his passenger. Shortly afterwards the smoke increased, the car burst into flames and burned until only a skeleton of iron was left, Bladid reports.

The Hveragerdi Fire Department arrived at the scene and quickly put out the flames that were left.

“We saw the incident very well because the car was on fire right outside our store. We gave the owner a fire extinguisher but that didn’t help much because the fire was so fierce,” said Stefán Thormar Gudmundsson, an employee in the pit stop Litla Kaffistofan, who witnessed the accident.

The cause of the fire is unclear.
