Last night’s football game in Kiev between Iceland and Ukraine ended in a draw, 1-1, RÚV reports. This was the teams’ first qualifying game for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, to be held in Russia.
Alfreð Finnbogason scored for Iceland five minutes into the game, but Andriy Yarmolenko tied for Ukraine during the 41st minute. Ukraine was awarded a penalty five minutes from time, but did not manage to score.
In Group I, which the two countries compete in, all three last night’s games ended in a tie. Therefore, all six teams in the group have one point following the first round.
Goalie Hannes Þór Halldórsson was disappointed with the result, although he described it as acceptable. He said the Icelandic team had the upper hand during the first half, but lost control after half time.
