Don’t Judge Whole Nation, Says Birna’s Father

The father of the late Birna Brjánsdóttir, a 20-year-old Icelandic woman who was murdered on January 14, posted a Facebook message yesterday, stating, “I denounce the conduct of judging a whole nation based on the actions of one man. The people of Greenland are our friends, and we ought to strengthen that friendship instead of the opposite.”

One man is in custody, suspected in Birna’s death. He is from Greenland and was a crew member of a trawler from there.

The reason for the father’s comment is an account, published by Nútíminn, of a woman from Greenland who reported having been shouted at when she went shopping at Kringlan and Smáralind shopping malls. The woman, who was stranded at Reykjavík Airport yesterday, during the severe weather, remarked, “I don’t want to be here anymore; this was not my fault.” She said she and a friend, both from Greenland, were shouted at inside the shopping malls, “because of the actions of some boy I don’t even know.”
