Don’t Drive in Heiðmörk

Health officials in the Reykjavík metropolitan area have issued a statement asking people to refrain from driving in Heiðmörk, the water protection area in the vicinity of Reykjavík. The roads in the area are treacherous, and there is a great risk of accidents.

Any driving in Heiðmörk poses a threat to the water protection area. The lava field in Heiðmörk is porous and ground water is close to the surface, making the water source sensitive to polluting agents. Therefore, it’s of essence that residents and travelers alike treat the surroundings with respect and adhere to road closures.

There is no winter road service in Heiðmörk, and all roads there are impassable for automobiles. This popular area is meant as an outdoor recreational area for hikers and cross country skiers.
