Because of the severe weather system affecting Iceland this morning, all domestic flights to and from Reykjavík Airport have been canceled, mbl.is reports. That cancelation is in effect at least through 2:15 pm, when the next update will be provided. Therefore, afternoon flights have not been ruled out.
The same is true for the other domestic airports—in Ísafjörður, Egilsstaðir and Akureyri. There, too, the situation will be reevaluated at 2:15. Flights from Akureyri to Greenland have been canceled as well.
The Icelandic Met Office has issued a strong gale warning for many parts of the country today, and a violent gale in West Iceland. For tomorrow, the strong gale will continue in East Iceland. Heavy rain is expected in the southeast today and tomorrow.
Driving will be hazardous today, RÚV reports, especially where water accumulates in tire tracks, such as on Reykjanesbraut, which is the road from Reykjavík to Keflavík International Airport.
In the southwest, the wind speed will be the strongest between 10 am and 1 pm. Meteorologist Elín Björk Jónasdóttir advises against travel during those hours.
Rescue workers are on stand-by. They have just been called to the Horticultural School in Hveragerði, where roof sheets are coming off.
International flight will continue uninterrupted despite the weather.
