Ólafur Eggertsson, farmer at Þorvaldseyri, located near Eyjafjallajökull, is calling for an international airport to be built at nearby Skógarsandur. Ólafur presented his idea at a community meeting on planning in the South Iceland municipality of Rangárþing eystra yesterday evening, mbl.is reports.

Ólafur runs a guesthouse and visitor center at his farm, which was one of the farms worst affected following the 2010 Eyjafjallajökull volcanic eruption. The farm became world famous when a photo of the ash cloud above the farm was used by the international media. The area is also a popular stop for its waterfall, Skógafoss.
The airport would save visitors from having to drive the 200 kilometers (124 miles) from Keflavík International Airport or 160 kilometers (100 miles) from Reykjavík, Ólafur argues.
