Debt Cancelation Boosts Support for Government

The Independence Party of Finance Minister Bjarni Benediktsson currently enjoys a support rating of 32.9 percent, up from 30.3 percent in late October, according to a new survey by daily Fréttablaðið. Last week the government announced the recipients of its mortgage relief plan.

Prime Minister Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson’s Progressive Party, whose main election promise was write-offs for homeowners, also enjoys a surge in support, up from 8.7 percent in October to the current support ranking of 12.8 percent.

In a survey published before the debt cancelation announcement, the government suffered a record low in support.

Fréttablaðið’s survey was carried out November 12-13. Three thousand voters were selected randomly and 800 people responded.
