In his lecture, Miliband said the problems of the European Union and the eurozone relate to politics, economy and the identity of its people. He criticized the austerity measures and increase in taxes undertaken in the Eurozone saying that it only made matters worse, mbl.is reports.

Miliband went on to say that the U.K. had a stronger position in the international arena as a result of joining the EU but that it was the right decision not to adopt the euro.

Miliband studied at Oxford and at MIT in Boston where he graduated with a Masters degree in Political Science.

He was elected as a Member of Parliament in 2001 and has since served as Schools Minister, Minister of State for Communities and Local Government and Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

Miliband has often participated in discussions on the environment.
