President of Iceland Guðni Th. Jóhannesson has invited Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II of Denmark to Iceland this December to celebrate the centennial anniversary of Iceland’s sovereignty from Denmark, RÚV reports.
On December 1st, 1918, Iceland became a free and sovereign state when the union treaty between Iceland and Denmark came into effect. The treaty was the result of a century-long campaign for self-determination.
Queen Margrethe II’s great grandfather, King Christian X of Denmark, was Iceland’s only king, and ruled over the country when it became a sovereign nation.
The 100-year anniversary of Iceland’s sovereignty will be celebrated around the country with diverse events spanning throughout 2018.
