The Icelandic Met Office was alerted yesterday to an unusual smell in the Crystal Ice Cave, a popular tourist destination. Air quality is now being monitored in the cave, which is located in Breiðamerkurjökull glacier, South Iceland, RÚV reports.
Geothermal activity underneath the glacier may release gases toxic to humans, which collect in low, enclosed areas such as caves. Gas meters measured a lack of oxygen in the Crystal Cave yesterday. All tour operators in the area have been notified of the situation.
