Apartment complexes in the former US Naval Air Station near Keflavík, Iceland, were badly damaged when water pipes burst last weekend.
The water inside the pipes froze, causing them to burst, thereby damaging at least 16 apartment complexes in the old Naval Air Station. In some apartments the water was 60 cm deep. Fréttabladid reports.
The Fire Department at Keflavík Airport was busy pumping water out of the apartments Sunday until yesterday afternoon.
It has not been confirmed how much it will cost the Icelandic state to repair the damaged apartments, but according to a preliminary estimation, the damage is worth tens of millions (ISK 1 million = EUR 11,035, USD 14,156).
The apartment complexes, which are under the supervision of the Foreign Ministry, have been vacant since the US military left Iceland in the end of September and have been kept minimally heated.
Recently, the Organization for the Development of Keflavík Airport was founded to transform the buildings in the former US Naval Air Station into business complexes.
