Dalvík Celebrates Eighth Annual Great Fish Day

The “Great Fish Day” festival will be celebrated for the eighth time in Dalvík, northeast Iceland, this coming weekend. The purpose of the festival is to have visitors crowd the town and treat them with free fish dishes and live entertainment.

Every year Dalvík residents and friends of the Great Fish Day prepare both traditional and new and inventive fish courses for festival attendees. This year new courses include blue mussel soup, giant salt fish pizza and cheese-filled fishballs, as described in the festival’s official booklet.

A novelty of last year’s program was the so-called “Vináttukedjan” or “Friendship Chain” where all attendees hold hands and take a moment to reflect on friendship. This addition to the program was well received so it will be repeated this year.

The Great Fish Day on Saturday will be preceded with the Great Fish Soup Night tonight, held for the fourth time, where Dalvík residents invite visitors to their homes to have a free taste of their special fish soup recipes.
