Daily Star Apologizes to Icelandic Footballer

The British newspaper Daily Star has issued an apology to Icelandic football player Eidur Smári Gudjohnsen, who plays with Tottenham, for claiming in a cover story in early May that he had greeted his friends with a Nazi salute at a bar.

The newspaper stated yesterday that Gudjohnsen is credible when saying that in fact he had been telling his friends a crude joke about Mexicans and that his gestures were not at all an imitation of the Nazi salute.

Eggert Skúlason, spokesperson for Gudjohnsen, told visir.is that since the newspaper had done what Gudjohnsen had asked for, to apologize, he has decided not to take this case any further. Gudjohnsen had never wanted to sue the paper.
