Icelandic coach Dagur Sigurðsson led his German men’s national handball team to victory yesterday at the EHF EURO 2016 in Poland when the team beat Spain 24-17, making Germans European champions. The victory also qualifies the team for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
Dagur has become a national hero in Germany. He has accomplished something that appeared to be impossible, because the German team arrived in Poland without several key players, who were out because of injury, according to RÚV. Thus, the victory is all the sweeter. Bild calls the victory a “handball miracle.”
Dagur is the second Icelandic coach to lead a national team to victory in a European Championship, something Þórir Hergeirsson accomplished with the Norwegian national women’s handball team in 2014.
