Icelander Dagur Sigurðsson may decide to quit his job next year as coach of the German men’s national handball team, according to RÚV. Handball Inside reports that Dagur will likely take advantage of a clause in his contract with the German Handball Federation, DHB, allowing him to cancel it.
The contract is good through the 2020 Olympics, but allows the canceling of the contract by both parties on June 30, 2017. DHB saw reason to send out a press release regarding the matter, but in it, DHB’s vice president, Bob Hanning, states that negotiations with Dagur are ongoing.
The reason for Dagur’s potential decision to leave is not mentioned in the press release, but Hanning points out that not surprisingly, Dagur is one of the world’s most sought after handball coaches. He said more would be revealed in coming weeks.
Under Dagur’s coaching, the German team won the European Championship in January and went on to win the bronze at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in the summer.
