Crane Catches Fire in Central Reykjavík

A crane caught fire yesterday when its engine exploded at a construction site in Borgartún in central Reykjavík, across the street from the Iceland Review offices. The driver managed to escape from the steering compartment in time.

The crane was ablaze in a matter of minutes. A police car, an ambulance and a fire truck rushed to the scene. Firefighters were quick to extinguish the fire despite heavy snowfall and poor visibility, icelandreview.com reports.

According to Fréttabladid, two other fires were reported in the capital region yesterday around the same time that the crane caught fire, in recently constructed buildings on Lambhagavegur in Reykjavík and Hlídarhjalli in Kópavogur. No one was harmed.
