The district court of Reykjavík has ruled that the controversial aluminium factory in the East Fjords will need an environmental assessment to begin operations. The factory, which will be powered by the Kárahnjúkar hydroelectric dam, was initially judged by then Environmental Minister Siv Fridriksdóttir to not need any environmental assessment.
The Environmental Ministry has appealed the court’s ruling and states that the judgement won’t affect the factory’s licence.
