Couple with Infant Arrested for Drug-Dealing

A young couple from the Sudurnes region in southwest Iceland were arrested in Reykjanesbaer yesterday with 180 grams of hash intended for sale. They had a four-month-old baby with them in their car.

Police stopped the vehicle during regular inspection. The driver, the father of the baby, appeared to be under the influence of drugs, Morgunbladid reports.

The couple, along with their baby, were made spend the night in the prison facilities of the Sudurnes police. Police notified child protection authorities following their arrest.

Police consider this case, which is rather unusual, very serious.

“When parents commit a crime it is not automatically categorized as negligence of their child,” said Hrefna Fridriksdóttir, a lawyer and the substitute for the director of the Government Agency for Child Protection.

“Drug-dealing can, however, threaten the safety of a child and it can be enough to conclude that the parents are not capable of taking care of it,” Fridriksdóttir said, adding that all aspects of the case need to be evaluated.

When asked whether it is responsible to make such a young baby spend the night in prison, Fridriksdóttir said that in some cases it may be necessary, especially if the baby is still being breastfed and when it is impossible to call out someone to take care of it in the middle of the night.
