Couple Suspected of Extortion Supported Democrats

The Icelandic woman who was arrested on suspicion of extortion in the US on Thursday and her boyfriend donated USD 20,000 (ISK 2.2 million, EUR 15,000) to the election fund of the Democratic Party earlier this year and had their picture taken with President Barack Obama.

The American media covered this story yesterday and contacted the White House because of it. They were told that because of the extortion case, the donation will be given to charity, Fréttabladid reports.

The couple is accused of having extorted up to USD 20 million (USD 223 million, EUR 1.5 million) from a wealthy individual by coming up with a story on how he was being persecuted by Polish priests of the Opus Dei sect.

The Icelandic woman’s partner stated in an interview with The Journal News yesterday that the victim is lying. The accused claimed the victim is a paranoid pornographer who evades taxes and paid him and his girlfriend a large amount for reclaiming a 30-year-old collection of musical compositions from a collapsed hard drive.

The woman’s father told the Icelandic media that he believes in his daughter’s innocence.
