Couple Reaches Top of Esja on 40 Feet

For the newlyweds Helga Magnúsdóttir and Bergur Þorri Benjamínsson, a trip to the top of a mountain is unique, mbl.is reports .

Bergur Þorri is bound to a wheelchair while Helga can only walk short distances with the support of a cane. The special trip was part of an initiative by the Center for Safety (Öryggismiðstöðin) to celebrate the company’s 20th anniversary. The initiative is called “All the Way Up” and involves helping 21 individuals make it to the top of Mt. Esja.

Helga surprised Bergur Þorri with the trip. Neither one of them had ever been to the top of Esja. “We had only been to the tops of mountains you can drive to,” Bergur explained. A group of 20 volunteers carried the couple, using special wheelchairs, up the mountain and back in rain and fog. Helga and Bergur were delighted upon their return.
