Counting sheep is advised when you’re having trouble sleeping, but counting seals should keep you awake. That, at least is what the Icelandic Seal Center is counting on. The center, which is located in Hvammstangi, Northwest Iceland, will be conducting its tenth annual Seal Count on Thursday, July 21. Volunteers are needed to count seals along the coastline of Vatnsnes peninsula.
The Seal Count begins at 2:30 pm with an orientation, which includes a short presentation about the center’s research. Thereafter, volunteers head out into the field and start counting. Coffee and cake will be served at the Seal Center afterwards, where you’ll have the opportunity to speak to local scientists.
Information about the number of seals in the area is gathered for the purpose of research. The 100 km long coastline is divided into different areas, ideal for people of all physical abilities, from the most avid hikers to families looking for a light walk along the beach.
The event is open to everyone, but not suitable for children under the age of 5. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Locals and tourists alike have enjoyed the Seal Count in past years. It’s an excellent volunteer opportunity for nature and animal lovers.
