Head of Reykjavík City Council and representative of the Liberal Party Ólafur F. Magnússon is against moving the old buildings on Laugavegur 4 to 6, as suggested by Mayor Dagur B. Eggertsson, and wants to preserve them in their current location instead.
Magnússon said the buildings on Laugavegur 2 to 6, which date back to the 19th century, form a unique street image which should be preserved. Two of the buildings are scheduled for demolition and Eggertsson proposed they be relocated to Hljómskálagardurinn public park as an alternative to tearing them down, Morgunbladid reports.
Magnússon believes the three-floor hotels, which the owner of the lots has been given permission to construct, will ruin the street image of Laugavegur and thus a piece of Reykjavík’s cultural history.
