Could QuizUp Trump Facebook?

Þorsteinn Friðriksson from Plain Vanilla, creators of the question game app QuizUp, says it is possible QuizUp could be the next Facebook. “That would be amazing and it is possible. Facebook has the size but not the momentum. Nobody under 15 is on Facebook today.”

Þorsteinn made his comments to American business magazine, Forbes; where he says QuizUp is not looking at the same idea as Facebook which, he says, is for connecting with old friends, while QuizUp is for making new ones.

In the interview, Þorsteinn tells the “incredible” story of QuizUp’s rise to global fame. He said that while he can’t guarantee the app will always be free, he hopes it will be. QuizUp has so far financed itself with support from companies like Coca-Cola and Google.

Þorsteinn admits that the company is losing money and is working on ways to incorporate advertising into QuizUp.

He believes that there is a gap in social media, as Facebook is a place you can mostly only interact with your existing friends. With the exception of dating sites, there are no famous social media on which you can meet new people with similar interests, RÚV reports.

In the interview, Þorsteinn reveals that QuizUp has 35 million registered users, and six million active users a month who compete to answer questions on hundreds of different subjects; with some of the most popular including Harry Potter and Game of Thrones.
