Corporate Bankruptcies up 37% from Last Year

Corporate bankruptcies this May totaled 66 companies, compared to 74 companies in May 2008, leaving an almost 11% decrease year over year, mbl.is and visir.is report.

When sorted by industry, most bankruptcies were in construction with 20 cases. Nine of the cases were in wholesale and retail.

During the first five months of 2009, 413 filed for bankruptcy, while during the first five months of 2008, there 301 businesses that filed for bankruptcy, representing an increase of over 37% year over year.
