Cornerstone Laid for Vigdís Finnbogadóttir Building

Yesterday, a cornerstone was laid for the Vigdís Finnbogadóttir Building for Foreign Languages at Brynjólfsgata 1 in Reykjavík, RÚV reports . The building will house the Vigdís Foundation, a center for languages and culture, which operates under the auspices of UNESCO.

A groundbreaking ceremony for the building took place last year, on the International Women’s Day, March 8. Yesterday, on Women’s Rights Day, former president Vigdís Finnbogadóttir and University of Iceland President Jón Atli Benediktsson laid the cornerstone for the building, which will include teaching and research facilities. South of the building, there will be a square for outdoor events.

Vigdís remarked, “The foundation is of major importance, because it’s international. And not only language instruction will take place here, but also research, and, as we know, the world revolves somewhat around languages, although we don’t think of it every day, because everything is done, thought and discovered in languages.” She added, “Of course this is one of the flagships of the University of Iceland and will be in the future.”

The foundation was established in 2001. Construction of the building is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
