Convicted Murderer Regains Law Licence

By Iceland Review

The District Court of Reykjavík has accepted Atli Helgason’s request to reinstate his licence to practice law, Vísir reports. Atli was sentenced to 16 years in prison in 2001 for the murder of Einar Örn Birgisson and had his license revoked at that time.

Atli received ‘restored honour’ just over two years ago, a controversial legal process which reinstates social standing to convicted criminals.

The Attorney General opposed Atli’s request. It remains unclear whether the decision will be appealed to the Land’s Court.
