Continued Seismicity at Bárðarbunga and Holuhraun

Continued earthquakes have been reported in Bárðarbunga volcano under Vatnajökull glacier over the holidays. Since 12 noon yesterday, three earthquakes of magnitude 4.0 and larger have been detected in the volcano, which feeds the eruption in Holuhraun.

Previously, other earthquakes of similar magnitude had been reported in the Bárðarbunga area with smaller quakes detected in the intrusive dike connecting the volcano and the eruption site and near Tungnafellsjökull glacier in the eruption’s vicinity.

The strongest earthquake to have hit Bárðarbunga recently measured magnitude 5.0 and occurred at 11:53 pm on December 25.

The Icelandic Met Office reported good visibility of the eruption in Holuhraun on web cams on December 27 and 28.
