The new prison will have a capacity for 56 prisoners and will include a special department for female inmates, mbl.is reports.

The prison will relieve pressure off the prison on Skólavörðustígur in Reykjavík and in Kópavogur.

A competition is being run for the decoration of the prison. Applications are being accepted until May 17.
