The central committee of the Confederation of Labor (ASÍ) agreed yesterday to submit a momentous proposal to ASÍ’s general meeting today that Iceland applies for membership to the European Union and adopts the euro as its currency.
According to the central committee, EU membership is the only realistic option for the reconstruction of the Icelandic economy, Morgunbladid reports.
ASÍ has not proposed such a major policy on joining the EU before and lively discussion about potential membership to the union is expected during the general meeting.
A new president of ASÍ will be elected tomorrow and both candidates, Ingibjörg R. Gudmundsdóttir, ASÍ’s current vice-president, and Gylfi Arnbjörnsson, ASÍ’s managing director, have declared their support for EU membership for Iceland.
ASÍ is the largest organized interest group for wage earners in Iceland with roughly 108,000 members across the country. The confederation fights for improved wages and rights for workers and negotiates with employees and the government on their behalf.
